Indian Government’s latest announcement has proposed revoking the special constitutional status of Kashmir, amid a heavy security crackdown.   The centre revoked Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and proposed that the state be split into Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh- two union territories.

Let us delve further into this.

What is Article 370?

Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in the Indian Union is defined particularly under Article 370 of the constitution.

When India gained independence in 1947, Jammu and Kashmir initially chose to remain independent and signed agreements with India and Pakistan. However, post an invasion from Pakistan, the state signed an Instrument of Accession with Union of India.

It was proposed that only –

  • Defence
  • Foreign Affairs
  • Communications related provisions of the Indian constitution would apply to the State.

Article 370 permits the state to draft its own constitution and also restricts the Indian Parliament’s legislative powers on the state.

What is Article 35A?

Article 35A permits the local legislature in Indian-controlled Kashmir to define the permanent residents of the region.

It forbids Indians from outside the state from buying land, holding local government jobs or getting education scholarships or permanently settling in the region.

What is the status post revoking Article 370?

The revoking of Article 370 will “completely integrate” the state with the Indian Union and its residents will enjoy all the equal rights like other citizens.

And with the abrogation of Article 370, Article 35A will automatically become void, thereby annulling the special status enjoyed by the residents over land, business and employment.

What’s in it for Education?

The state of Education and schooling in the valley has seen tough times. With constant violence lurking and the frequent imposition of Section 144, there are learning gaps in the education system.

  • The state is yet to pass the Right to Education Act, 2009.
  • There is a lack of adequate teaching and non-teaching staff.
  • The medium of instruction is still a problem for many

With the annulment of Article 370, the marginalized sections will get the benefits of education and employment.

Also, Right to Education, Right to Information, reservation in education and employment for deprived communities will improve the prospects of growth.

Amidst this, there is also an inherent disadvantage in students lacking guidance with respect to future opportunities.

Guidance: The Game Changer

With the annulment of Article 370, new avenues will be opened and guidance is important to make the right choices.

The right guidance at the right time is pivotal to choose the right career.

Top schools across the country have chosen Univariety’s career guidance system for their students.

In Jammu, premier schools like KC Public School have chosen the system to increase awareness in students and assist them in making better career choices.

As covered in State Times- The Bold Voice of J&K, Univariety’s career guidance has been instrumental in charting student success

With the revoking of Article 370, there is no doubt that the valley will see a spike in the nature of careers, the course selection, and country choices.

Schools with student success as a priority have always chosen a comprehensive career guidance system.
